Empowering Sustainable Beekeepers in North Macedonia: A Journey to Certified Excellence
Period
2020 - 2020

Through the We Effect IISEE practice, beekeeping trainees in Northern Macedonia, including Lazo Krumov, are being equipped to produce and sell their honey with the "Sustainably Produced Honey and Other Bee Products" certification. The National Farmers' Federation (NFF) plays a crucial role in promoting collective beekeeping activities and enabling young entrepreneurs to expand honey production. Working together, the NFF and its association, Meden Istok, provide a broader platform for marketing and selling honey, reducing youth migration by presenting beekeeping as a viable source of income. This practice not only promotes high-quality, safe bee products, but also champions sustainable resource use and biotechnological methods, ensuring the long-term success of beekeepers like Lazo Krumov and his family.

Identification needs
Soon after the trainings, the beekeeping apprentices like Lazo Krumov can produce and sell their own honey under the certification mark “Sustainably produced honey and other bee products”. All of this is supported and facilitated by We Effect's partner organisation in the country, the National Federation of Farmers – NFF, though our IISEE project. The most important aspect for his beekeeping business is to promote the sustainable use of natural resources and application of biotechnical methods to ensure good quality and safe bee products.
Stakeholder change
His next big step is obtaining the certificate for sustainable honey production from Meden Istok and selling his honey under this brand. In this context, We Effect’s partner organisation NFF and its association Meden Istok are trying to strengthen the beekeeping activities as a collective endeavour, among other things by enabling young people to scale up their honey production and provide them with a wider platform on which to market and sell their honey. The project also has a potential to reduce migration of young people both in the country’s capital and in Western Europe, by showing that investing in beekeeping can generate real income.
Change triggered
He works together with his father, who also attended the training. He has stated initially, but the idea is to turn this into a family business, which started with just three, but now has nearly 30 beehives located on a mountainous terrain, 13 kilometers from his home village of Gorni Podlog in the eastern part of the country.
Short description
For Lazo Krumov from North Macedonia, beekeeping generates much more than honey. According to him, using sustainable techniques to harness the power of the bees benefits both nature and the people, because only sustainable beekeeping can lead to true success.
