Identification needs
Low crop productivity is often caused by a lack of education among farmers regarding crop production and the benefits of integrating beekeeping into their farms to increase pollination services. Additionally, the absence of a veterinarian in the community often results in the death of cows, sheep, and goats. Farmers are forced to travel to the district capital for treatment, and sometimes the animals die on the way.
Stakeholder change
In Boafre, 40 women and youth smallholders were trained to enhance their capability and capacity in sustainable crop farming practices. Additionally, they were taught how to integrate beekeeping into their crop farms to increase crop productivity, sale of bee products, pollinator conservation, and biodiversity while reducing environmental degradation.
Change triggered
Farmers have experienced a 40% increase in crop productivity, resulting in a 100% increase in revenue from the sale of crops and bee products. Additionally, at least four people are employed in the harvesting of crops and bee products.
Short description
Pollination is crucial for life on Earth. Bees and other pollinators have thrived for millions of years, ensuring food security, nutrition, and biodiversity for plants, humans, and bees themselves. Pollinators are vital for producing many fruit crops. Honey hunting involves obtaining honey and beeswax from wild honeybees. Beekeeping involves housing bees in a container and encompasses techniques for harvesting and processing their products. Honeybees can be utilized for pollination services or product extraction, with methods determined by bee types and beekeeper resources and skills. Beekeeping is an adaptable activity suitable for anyone, regardless of age or location.
