Integrating agriculture, tourism, and cultural preservation: a holistic approach to protect ancient Albanian olive groves
Period
2019 - 2021

Efforts are underway to safeguard ancient olive groves in the Mediterranean while maximising their agricultural, rural development, and tourism potential. This practice explores a comprehensive approach implemented in Albania raising awareness of local stakeholders and involving them in activities related to old olive trees. Concretely, this practice has led to new tourism activities for the protection and valorisation of biodiversity due to the presence of numerous botanical species and their culinary characteristics and health values, the improvement of the quality of tourist guides with data from community maps and unique production of oil from the ancient olive trees.

Identification needs
The need to protect ancient olive groves, which are unique to the Mediterranean, and to use the land in an efficient and attractive manner in terms of agriculture, rural development and specific tourism in olive grove and natural areas (hiking, cycling, etc.), combined with visits to historical and cultural sites, has led to the demand for all these aspects to be included in one project. The participation of different countries with different agro-ecological and cultural traditions is seen as an opportunity to exchange important elements in different plans.
Stakeholder change
On the basis of a  recent stakeholder study, specific lists of stakeholders related to the project activities and objectives have been prepared: 1. Representatives of agencies and institutions at national and regional level (No. 13) 2. Representatives of local government (No. 6) 3. Operators involved in ancient olive trees and the production of quality olive oil and other tourism-related activities (No. 10 in Marikaj, No. 19 in Ndroq and No. 9 in Preza). 4. NGOs and tourism agencies (No. 10).
Change triggered
The project's activities have had a significant impact on agricultural activities (cultivation practices in the ancient olive groves) and those related to tourism in the ancient olive groves, and specifically - Improvement of cultivation practices aimed at preserving the environment and biodiversity. - Qualified demonstrations of the presence of numerous botanical species and their culinary characteristics and health values, as well as their use for special menus offered to visitors. (especially in Marikaj) - Improvement of the quality of tourist guides with data from community maps; (especially in Marikaj) - Special production of oil from the ancient olive trees and sale in a tourist point in the centre of Tirana (coming from Marikaj) - Advanced proposals to introduce other Albanian areas in the areas involved in the capitalisation phase with special lectures and dissemination of experiences.
Short description
Raising the awareness of local stakeholders and involving them in activities related to old olive trees was achieved through 1. numerous meetings with Italian and Albanian specialists (best practice); 2. discussions of local stakeholders directly with Italian specialists in the field of community maps and on tourism as the key to rural development in these areas; 3. good level of participation in group work of specialists (Italian and Albanian) and interested operators.
